Oracle Essbase provides business users with powerful online analytical processing (OLAP). Query results can be viewed through interfaces of the user’s choice, including Microsoft Office tools and the variety of intuitive reporting options Oracle offers. With the benefit of consistent response times of less than one second, users can interact with data quickly and without the assistance of technical experts.

This ability to “talk” to the data – to understand that one answer to one question leads to another – enables business users to better identify and analyze the metrics and relationships that affect performance and make better, more informed decisions. Essbase: State-of-the-art calculation engine

At its core, Oracle Essbase includes a powerful calculation engine with over 350 pre-built, out-of-the-box functions. With this comprehensive library, Oracle Essbase can scale from simple aggregations to complex, multi-dimensional mappings. Financial formulas of all types are included to support business model development. In addition, business rules can be created to manage complex calculation requirements with spreadsheet-like syntax.

Multidimensional representation and extension

Data is categorized in Oracle Essbase in terms of dimensions, for example, a dimension could represent a time period or a product or a customer. Thus, a query may consist of comparing the actual sales for a product in a particular state during the month of March 2010 with the corresponding budgeted value for that month.

There are often relationships between members of a dimension, and these relationships are represented by a hierarchy. A hierarchy allows mathematical calculations to be performed on the data, so that, for example, all sales for individual states can be aggregated to create a value for the entire U.S.

With Oracle Essbase, multiple hierarchies can be set up so that data can be quickly calculated or aggregated. Structures in Oracle Essbase such as dimensions and hierarchies are displayed in the “Outline”. This is a graphical representation that allows authorized users to easily review and manage structures as business needs change. Users can extend data using metrics or drivers to estimate the results will be in the future.

These driver metrics can be entered on the history, trends or by the user. These predicted results can be compared with the actual results and the reasons for the deviations studied, so that more accurate predictions can then be made.

This “what-if” analysis also allows users to create additional scenarios in which they can model extraordinary changes in the business and be prepared for turbulent trading conditions.
